Earth, Moon, and Observer Simulation

This simulation shows how the Moon’s position and a person’s viewpoint affect observed angles.

Use the sliders or arrow keys to rotate the Moon and the person. Screen readers will announce angle changes.

How to Use the Sim

Step 1: Click the toggle button to toggle between an Earthling's view and an alien's point of view.

Step 2: Click the play button to move the Moon and Earth at the same rate.

Step 3: Click the fast forward to move ahead one degree of rotation/revolution.

Step 4: Click the reverse button to move back one degree of rotation/revolution

Keyboard Shortcuts

Tab: move to the next field.

ShiftTab: move to previous field

Space: click an item

LeftArrow: move Moon counterclockwise

RightArrow: move Moon clockwise

UpArrow: move Earth counterclockwise

DownArrow: move Earth clockwise
